CANYON OAK RESIDENCE

This is a full remodel/addition to a home built in 1938 in The Oaks, an historic Los Angeles neighborhood. The original front facade remains entirely intact. The interior was reconfigured and modernized, while staying true to the spirit of the original house. As the house was taken apart, every item removed was tagged and kept for reuse. Most of the original windows remain, but the few that were removed are now in new locations- one providing light into the powder room, another placed between the primary vanity and shower. Ceiling rafters were reused as tie beams in the living room and primary bedroom. Existing door knobs, light fixtures, and sinks were shuffled around until they found a home.
The kitchen was moved to the back of the house and has large windows open to the backyard. The island is an antique sourced from Ohio. We vaulted the ceiling in the front den and added walls of bookshelves extending to the ceiling. The living room ceiling was also vaulted.

The rest of the attic was transformed into a new primary bedroom suite. The primary was designed to look like it was added in stages over the years, with painted wood boarding and a dormer area sheathed in stained beadboard. Another new dormer contains the primary shower.
